Today’s “Ball” selection is by Dutch painter Jean Humbert. In this handsomely decorated scene a woman dresses for the party with the help of two companions. If I were to judge by her dramatic body language and the stare off into the distance, it seem something particularly special will await her that evening. Obviously, her mind is elsewhere. Her two companions, on the other hand, are preoccupied with making sure her outfit is just right for her night out. In this scene, she doesn’t seem outwardly grateful for their help. Anyway, with the burden of perfecting her dress entirely off her shoulders, our privileged subject can focus on whatever drama or romance she’s engaged in.
On an added note, this is visually a very busy scene. I love the creases in the dress, the items on the nearby table, and the scene in the background.
