Edgar Degas - Portrait After a Costume Ball (1877)

Today’s “Ball” selection is by French painter Edgar Degas. Most viewers would not consider this a particularly flattering portrait of our subject, and an observation of her expression and body language might lead one of conclude that she’s intoxicated, which would seem plausible given this scene is “after” the party. That said, while our subject might be experiencing some disorientation, Degas’s presentation of the scene and use of color would seem to indicate an affection for her.

That aside, I love the reflection in the mirror, which boast a curious display of red. I’m also intrigued by what appears to be the profile of a face at the far right edge. Strange.
