Frank W. Benson - Before the Ball (1894)

Today's "Ball" selection is by American painter Frank W. Benson. This dark interior scene is occupied by two subjects. The woman in the foreground strikes a strong, traditional pose, as if this were her own portrait, while the woman in back is less distinct, seated and turned away from us while preoccupied with some other task. I am curious about the relationship between the two women, as well as what the artist meant to impress upon the viewer by his presentation of them in this manner. As you'll notice, they're even shown in different lights; the foreground woman is shown in natural light, while the woman in back appear to be lighted by the warm light of a lamp or fire. It definitely makes for a very visually striking image.
