Today's "Ball" selection is by French painter Madeleine Jeanne Lemaire. In this scene one woman helps another with her glove after that evening's ball. To be completely honest, the interaction of these two subjects registers as particularly cold, which I might attribute to the bright color palette. The light blue and yellow which dominates the painting lacks the warmth I’m accustomed to in such a scene. I wonder how a slight change in lighting would affect my response to this work. Perhaps it’s best that Lemaire’s choice of palette placed me outside familiar territory.
That being said, I love how nicely the woman's light blue dress complements the room.
