John Callcott Horsley - Preparing for the Ball

Today's "Ball" painting is by English artist John Callcott Horsley. As one can see, the woman in the center is being prepared for that evening's party. Although I could be mistaken, I doubt that either one her two aids will be attending the function with her, as I assume them to be household servants. If that is the case, at least she appears greatful toward her staff. Her friendly expression, as well as the artist's tender use of light, gives me the impression that Horsley did not intend his audience to view her critically on account of her wealth. Instead we are unvited to observe their quiet interaction as they occupy this cozy interior with its lavish decor. The entire scene, including our subjects' style of dress, seem inspired by the orient. I'm unsure when and where this is supposed to take place, but at any rate I enjoy the change of scenery it provides for this month's "Ball" series.
