Paul Rieth - Jugend Magazine Illustration (1925)

For today's "Ball" selection I will share an illustration by German artist Paul Rieth. This work was featured in Jugend, a German art magazine which popular for showcasing artist's who worked in the Art Nouveau style.

If this illustration has a title, it was not made available to me, thus I will make my own assumptions as to what is happening in this scene. The man in the background appears to be wearing pajamas, so it's safe to guess that he and his masked companion just arrived home from a party and are now preparing for bed. It could also be that he's retiring for the evening while she's readying herself to go out. Who knows. Maybe those pajamas are actually some sort of costume, and they're both preparing to going out together.

Rieth captured a playfulness from this otherwise casual scene. I love the way the woman props her leg up as she reaches for her mask. She seems like such a confident, lively person, the type one would like meet in passing at a social function.
