Gari Melchers - After the Ball (1884)

I will conclude April's "Ball" series with a intimate piece by American painter Gari Melchers. Tired out from her busy evening, the young woman has dozed off while a holding a flower, which we can presume was given to her by an admirer. Melchers wisely frames his subject to command our attention on her. With her left arm dangling at her side, he definetely captures his subject's exhaustion after an eventful night. I would conclude that her evening out was time well spent.

The setting is minimal and non-descript, certainly nothing like which we would associate with a ball. In this work we're offered to observe our subject without distraction, removed from the glamour and decorations found back at the party only to occupy these lonely, brown walls of her home.
