Today's "Ball" selection by Norweigen artist Aksel Waldemar Johannessen places me in unfamiliar waters. I usually feature traditional 19th century works, but this painting has a modern edge which places me outside that comfort zone, which, by the way, is good.
Painting in a style which resembles German Expressionism, Johannessen's work depicts a man and woman after that evening's ball. Assuming they were drinking, perhaps the artist's wild colors and unnatural representation are meant to reflect their inebriated state. To appreciate this painting, I'd have to view more of the artist's work to better understand how he expresses emotions and ideas while operating in this style.
