Otto Erdmann - Preparations for the Masked Ball

In today's selection by German Rococo painter Otto Erdmann, I am curious as to how the art meant for the viewer to interpret this scene.  Positioned on his knees, a young man is fastened with a small, floral hat while expressing affection toward the seated woman, presumably his lover, across the room. Did the artist execute "Preparations" in earnest or was this meant to be humorous? Whatever Erdmann's intent, this scene appealed to me for its apparent combination of devotion and submissiveness. For some people I imagine there's little distinction between the two.
