To wrap up my "Ball" series for March 2018, I would like to share a work by French artist Jean-Louis Forain. Here we have a lanky, well-dressed gentleman laying on a bed after what must have been a busy evening out. In comparison to the more grandiose paintings I shared this month, Forain's piece has a rough, sketched quality which lends a candid element to the scene. It's a simple yet highly effective technique.
Each time I view this work, Forain's use of line, especially for the shoes, really stands out to me. Also, I like how the subject's face is non-descript, as if the artist was more concerned with capturing the man's body in repose. Forain's study skillfully shows us an exhausted figure enjoying some much deserved relaxation.
