Edouard Rosset-Granger - On the Way to the Ball

In today’s “Ball” selection French painter Edouard Rosset-Granger’s choice of lighting adds intrigue to an otherwise casual scene of a woman departing for that evening’s event. Our subject descends the dimly-lit stairway, leaving the warm tones seen over her shoulder. I presume this stairwell light is supplied by the moon coming in from a nearby window. Granger’s dramatic use of lighting gives me the impression that his subject up to something—perhaps in the act of sneaking out without permission, or off to see a forbidden someone at the ball. She’s leaving the warm, comfortable light of home to explore the forbidden pleasures of the night! I love how the decorative design of the stairway railing guilds the eye through the scene while reflecting the various tones of light, both warm and dreary. Excellent.
