Alfred Stevens - After the Ball, also known as Confidence (1874)

Today I will share “After the Ball” by Belgian painter Alfred Stevens. This is one of the handful of works which inspired me to embark of this “Ball” series. This piece of Stevens is such a tearjerker. A woman gently consoles her friend, whose evening at the ball resulted in disappointment. The “Confidence” title gives me the impression Stevens meant to illustrate a life lession. Perhaps the woman did not have the courage to engage a certain someone at the ball, or maybe she did but her efforts were unsatisfactory. Gathering the will to pull yourself up and try again is a challenge may folks experience—not just after “The Ball” but everywhere.
