Happy Monday! Today I would like to share a work by French painter Edouard Debat-Ponsan. In this scene we observe a mother, dressed for that evening’s ball, nursing her child before accompanying her husband to the event. Their maid idles over her shoulder, and will presumably take the little one after feeding is complete. I find this a very tender prelude to our couple’s evening out. New parents often find to must adapt their routines—even dancing and socializing—to satisfy the needs of their young.
The child needs milk, but the party must go on!
I imagine the mother might have a difficult time releasing the child before handing over to the maid. “A minute more,” she assures her patient husband.
