Giuseppe de Nittis - Return from the Ball (1870)

Today I am pleased to present a work by Italian painter Giuseppe de Nittis. In this scene it appears that these two women are sneaking their way home after an evening at the ball. I’m not sure on what side of the wooden door their destination lies; they might have entered through the door just moments ago and are checking to see if they were spotted, or they’re trying to access through while looking to see if the coast is clear. One can study their positions to determine where they might be going. Either way, their attention is fixed on whoever and whatever is behind that door, and this work offers a wonderful, candid snapshot of this post-event activity.

I also like the contrasts of their fancy dresses amongst the bricks of the garden wall as well as the surrounding vegetation.
