Henri Lucien Doucet - After The Ball

Happy Friday! Today I will share a fantastic work by French painter Henri Lucien Doucet. This piece depicts a man and woman--presumably a couple--relaxing at home after what must have been an enjoyable evening out. They will soon prepare for bed, but not solely for the purpose of sleep, if you know what I mean. With a soft smile, the woman is seated comfortably on the bed, awaiting her partner's company as he admires her from a short distance away. Doucet's achievement in this scene is making it highly suggestive while maintaining an elegance about his subjects.

I enjoy Doucet's attention detail throughout the scene. Observe the bouquet of flowers on the floor, the woman foot resting on the pillow, and the scarf draped on the chair.
Doucet's use of pink and blue is also very pleasing to the eye. My favorite quality of this painting is the light shadow over the woman face, contributing to her seductive allure.
