Franz Xaver Simm - Preparing For the Ball

Today I will share a beautiful work by Austrian painter Franz Xaver Simm. I’m not an expert on women’s hairstyles, but I would guess this young lady is having a pompadour prepared for the coming ball. She is also joined another gentleman who is reading to her from what appears to be a novel. I would like to imagine that the story connects with her expectations for that evening’s event. Simm has captured a look of hope in the lady’s eye, as if she was wondering what possibilities await her later that evening. Maybe she’ll meet a special someone or acquaint herself with some exciting friends, and perhaps story she’s currently intently absorbing follows along those same lines. It’s not uncommon for people to use art—including books, music, and movies—as a method to prepare themselves for real life activities, and that it what this painting represents to me.
