Viktor Schramm - Preparing for the Ball (1900)

Today I will share a work by Romanian painter Viktor Schramm. A simple Google search of his name will result in many warmhearted paintings of women occupying the homestead. His "Preparing for the Ball" immediately caught my attention with a rich color palette of pink, blues, and yellows. The delicate rendering of his subjects' dresses is gorgeous. Though I appreciate the thoughtful sentiment between the women, this painting provides such a beautiful viewing experience that I find it difficult to register any emotion from our two subjects. Schramm might as well have used manniquins, and this work reminds me of the window display at what was once Marshal Field's in Chicago. As is, "Ball" is more centered on its fantastic display of fabrics and attention to atmosphere. I'm especially intrigued by the reflection of the outside found within the large mirror, which is flanked by two paintings of landscapes scenes. Beautiful.
