Sir John Lavery - After the Dance

I'll start this series with this somber piece by Irish painter Sir John Lavery. Seated against the wall under bright overhead lighting, the young woman's face is hidden in shadow as she appears to deep in thought--perhaps pondering whatever she read from the note in her hand. This use of shadow immediately establishes a dramatic air which carries the scene.

In the upper left corner there's a mirror which shows the reflection of two people--an elderly man and woman--who are observing her with concern. The man appears to be holding a blue coat which I assume belongs our subject.

Despite the young woman's mourning, I find this work very enjoyable to look at. I love the artist's use of yellow and brown along with sparce amounts of blue. I like the designs found within the wallpaper and mirror as well.
