John Collier - Marriage of Convenience (1907)

Referencing yesterday's entry, today I would like to share another 'Marriage of Convenience,' this one by English painter John Collier. Within this scene we observe two people--a young woman at the floor, anguished and defeated by her predicament, while an older woman, presumably her mother, inhabits the other side of the composition, her figure tall and dominant as she peers down at her daughter across the room. This is open to interpretation, but I would assume the daughter has been or will be forced into a marriage by her mother, who shall benefit from the union. The stark light provides drama to an already emotionally charged scene.
