William Quiller Orchardson - Marriage of Convenience

In today's piece by Scottish painter William Quiller Orchardson, I'm curious about the inclusion of the old woman behind the curtains, who has seemingly found herself witnessing a problematic scene between the husband and wife in their bedroom quarters. She might be a family member or even a household servant, but nonetheless we identify with the her befuddled expression because we too are intruding on this awkward episode between two people in their married life. I wonder if the old woman is surprised by the wife's rejection of her husband's advance, or if it simply confirms her suspicion about their relationship.
