William Bromley - Rejection (1868)

In today's piece by English painter William Bromley, a man pokes about in the fireplace, consoling himself after his rejection by the woman, presumably his lover. I image the crackling of the fire provides him carthesis as he plots his next course of action. She, on the other hand, is probably already three steps ahead of him, calmly awaiting his next move. Their relationship is predictable yet comfortable.
