Today I would like to share ‘The Bird Fancier’ by Spanish painter José Jiménez y Aranda. I admire how Aranda captured this gentleman observing his caged feathered friend. The man’s attentiveness and posture, slightly leaning forward for a closer look at the bird, reminds me of how an art admirer might observe works while touring a gallery. As the viewer, I find myself examining Aranda’s painting in much the same way.
The umbrella tucked in the man’s shoulder adds an interesting conversation point. Our gentleman uses his umbrella for protection against the outside elements, while the birdies, kept in small cages within this drab interior, would probably wish nothing more than to feel the rain upon the wings again.
