Henryk Siemiradzki - Following the Example of the Gods (1899)

For today's Art for the Month of June I would like to share 'Following the Example of the Gods' by Polish painter Henryk Siemiradzki. This work depicts a serene outdoor scene in which two lovers embrace while a nearby statue mirrors their display of affection. I’m unsure whether our title’s “gods” refer the statue specifically, or whom the two figures are meant to represent, but nonetheless the sight of these two couples—one living and one stone—gives Siemiradzki's painting a wonderful life-imitates-art dynamic which I find inspiring.
