Harry Roseland - Looking into the Future (1899)

Today I would like to share ‘Looking into the Future’ by American painter Harry Roseland. As an early supporter for civil rights, much of Roseland’s artistic output portrayed the lives of poor African-Americans, and he was popular for his paintings of elderly black women fortune tellers receiving visits from white female clients. That context aside, what struck me about his ‘Looking into the Future’ is the striking contrast between fancily dressed woman and the humble surroundings of the fortune teller’s home. The search for the unknowable takes people to the most surprising places. Upon first viewing, without knowledge of Roseland’s larger body of work, this is what his ‘Looking into the Future’ communicated to me.
