Eastman Johnson - The New Bonnet, 1876

Tonight I'm sharing Eastman Johnson's The New Bonnet, which I saw on display at the MET. What immediately stood out to me is that the bonnet itself is located at the far right of the composition, clearly outside the focal area which resides around the older gentleman sitting at the fireplace and the lady stirring her beverage. I’m intrigued by the humble selection of items found upon the mantle and hanging from the wall, as well as whatever relevance, or lack thereof, they might have to the woman’s latest piece of headgear.
