My First Hot Doug’s Experience!

This morning Dennis and his friend Steve picked me up for an early visit to Hot Doug’s. Believe it or not, this was my first time at Chicago’s famous “Sausage Superstore and Encased Meat Emporium”.

Anyway, we arrived shortly after their 10:30am opening time, waited maybe minutes in line—thankfully avoiding having a stand outside—and then placed our orders. I was feeling adventurous so I made two selections from the Daily Specials menu—the Smoked Hungarian Pork Sausage with sweet smoked paprika mustard and mustard seed gouda cheese, and the Saucisson Alsacienne, which is bacon sausage with creme fraiche, caramelized onions and port salut cheese.

What can I say, for all I’ve heard about Hot Doug’s, this visit definitely exceeded my expectations. I found it especially interesting at how this relatively small restaurant space manages to accommodate so much in-dining throughout the day; There isn’t a seating system, nor are there a lot of tables, but people don’t linger around after finishing their meals and turnover rate is remarkably high.

As we exited I noticed a line which had already formed outside. It’d be at least 10 minutes until those folks at the end reached the entrance. That’s a lot of time to spend freezing in the cold for a couple hot dogs.
