John White Alexander - Sunlight (1909)

Today I would like to share ‘Sunlight’ by American painter John White Alexander. What appeals to me about this work is how the young woman appears to be tracking the streaks of light upon her dress. I love the way these long streaks compliment the length of the folds of the fabric. Very nice. The red ribbon in her hair is a nice touch, balancing out the other warm colors throughout the painting.

In regards to aesthetics in painting, I’m always impressed by the artist’s ability to render light. In this work by Alexander, the artist seems driven by his subject’s own appreciation of the light source, and we the viewer are invited to observe this beautiful light with her our yellow-dressed companion.
