Today I would like to share 'The Faithful at Prayer' by English painter Charles Robertson. What interests me about this work is the artist's emphasis on the many of shoes found outside the mosque. Removing footwear before entering a mosque is part of Islamic practice, and obviously these shoes belong to the Muslims seen in the distance. This is such a simple yet powerful observation, illustrating the faithfuls' respect for their sacred place. I'm not a religious man, however I feel I can identify with the their regard for this space.
I also enjoy the detail shown throughout this scene, including the designs on the stairway and the colored wall tiles. The sunlight gently resting down upon the steps also add a majesty to this painting.
